Our Story

CogWell student training began as an outgrowth of a Victor Frankl conference called “Finding Meaning”, which took place in 2005 at Penn.  Cogwell is a Student Activities Council  (SAC) recognized student group, a member of the Penn Wellness organization and the Penn Undergraduate Health Coalition.

Our aim is to create an open and empathetic dialogue on campus around mental health, whilst also preparing and empowering students on how to effectively help others in need.

Empathy

Each semester we provide interactive training opportunities including active listening, study breaks and various speakers well-versed in mental health and communication skills. Training participants learn to differentiate between regular stress to the more serious problems, identifying mental health concerns and are given the skills to effectively and compassionately engage peers in need of support, connecting them with appropriate campus resources where necessary.

Interested students can assume a leadership role supported by a mental health advisory consultant.
